Received this e-mail today from former Attorney General and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau director, Richard Cordray’s (D. OH), gubernatorial campaign:
With their final vote, the Republican leaders in Congress just passed their disastrous tax plan.
After weeks of secrecy, last-minute changes, and cruel indifference to the objections of the public, they pushed through a bill that will put our country into unmatched debt in order to appease their donors.
But even more alarming, Speaker Paul Ryan and other leaders are now setting the stage for sweeping cuts to vital programs like Medicare and Social Security in 2018.
We must draw the line right now to defend these programs against any cuts in the coming year. Add your name and stand up to any attack on America's social safety net.
By setting aside these tax breaks for the wealthy few, we could have made real progress on the kitchen table issues that impact millions of families. We could have funded the Children's Health Insurance Program, or invested in a national infrastructure program that would have put Americans to work and rebuilt our crumbling roads and bridges.
But none of that is going to happen, and their tax plan is expected to add more than $1 trillion to our national debt. It's an unjustifiable gift to the richest Americans — and with victory in their sights, Republicans are eager to move forward on their next goal of slashing federal spending on poverty-fighting programs.
What is happening in Washington now will hurt the people of Ohio, from fixed-income retirees to workers living paycheck to paycheck, and this dishonest tax bill is just the beginning. Our state deserves leaders who will fight for their issues, not threaten their economic future.
Speak out right now — tell Congress to reject any cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and other lifesaving programs.
Yours,
Rich Cordray
