UK will not pay out over slavery, says Reeves

The UK is "not going to be paying out" reparations for the transatlantic slave trade, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has told the BBC.

Her comments come as diplomatic sources told the BBC that the Commonwealth heads of government are preparing to begin a "meaningful conversation" about an issue which could potentially mean the UK owing billions of pounds.

The chancellor said she understood why Commonwealth leaders would be making such demands, but it was not something the UK government would commit to.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who is attending the summit, said he wanted to discuss current challenges, especially climate change, rather than issues of the past.

“Of course slavery is abhorrent to everybody; the trade and the practice, there's no question about that. But I think from my point of view… I'd rather roll up my sleeves and work... on the current future-facing challenges.”

What we know about the McDonald's E. coli outbreak

McDonald’s has temporarily removed quarter pounders and fresh, slivered onions from the menu in about a fifth of its US stores due to an outbreak of deadly E. coli poisoning.

So far, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recorded 49 cases of illness across 10 states. Ten cases resulted in patients being admitted to hospital and one person has died.

Most of the cases of E. coli, a type of bacteria that can cause serious stomach problems, were recorded in western and Midwest states, according to the CDC.

The chain's decision to remove the patties and onions from the menu affects stores in Colorado, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, as well as parts of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.   The company said the stores involved had used multiple suppliers for the beef patties, but shared a single supplier of onions - identified as California-based Taylor Farms, one of the world's largest vegetable processors.
