Q:On Tuesday, Ohio will have a referendum on whether to approve or reject Senate Bill 5, which was passed earlier this year, and limits collective bargaining rights for public employees. If the election was today, would you vote to approve or reject Senate Bill 5?
Approve: 33 (36)
Reject: 59 (56)
Not sure: 8 (8)
Despite the money pouring in from anti-worker groups advertising in support of Issue 2, opposition continues to grow.
But there's a twist. The last time PPP polled Ohio, there was some concern that because PPP (and Quinnipiac) had not asked about Issue 2 in the language in which it would appear on the ballot, their results were overly optimistic. PPP had asked the question you see above, but the ballot question will not refer to collective bargaining rights explicitly.
At the time, PPP's Tom Jensen explained his logic for the wording by pointing out that "this is what’s driving people to the polls, so I assume they’re going to know how they’re voting before they get there." But this time around, PPP asked about Issue 2 twice, adding a question in the language of the ballot.
Q:Issue 2 is a referendum on Senate Bill 5, which is a new law relative to government union contracts and other government employment contracts and policies. If the election was today, would you vote yes to approve this law or no to reject this law?
Would vote yes: 36
Would vote no: 59
Undecided: 5
We'll get the final answer tomorrow night, but it looks like however you word the question, Ohio voters are planning to vote no on Issue 2 and reject SB 5.
