Perhaps you are not old enough to remember. But Jean Quan is plenty old enough to remember Kent State. She would have been about twenty three when one of the most tragic events of the Vietnam War era -- the killing of four young Americans by other young Americans -- took place.
My husband, Floyd, and I met as student activists at UC Berkeley in the middle of the Civil Rights movements of the 1960s,
As an activist and someone just coming out of the Berkeley of the 60's, it is hard to imagine her not being appalled at the time by the gunning down of protesters that took place in Ohio. So what in the name of all that is sane could have prompted Quan to unleash the Oakland Police Department on peaceful protesters just days ago? To mobilize hundreds of police in full riot gear armed with tear gas, flash bombs, billy clubs and rubber bullets?
We may never know what caused her to disregard her heritage. But we know this. She came a few millimeters from the nation once again having to ask the question immortalized by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young:
How Many More?
Let's make sure it stays at none. Perhaps the Mayors of other #Occupied cities should think about that.
