Social Security, women and poverty in Maine

Maine has the oldest population in the nation, with a median age of 41.2 (Utah is the youngest, with a median age of just 28.5; source US Census Bureau).

Maine is also one of the poorest states in the nation, with a per capita income of $33,722, ranking 35th amongst all states, and well below the rest of New England (source: US Census Bureau, 2007). Connecticut ranks 1st in the nation, with a per capita income of $54,117; Massachusetts ranks 3rd, New Hampshire 8th, Rhode Island 17th, and Vermont 23rd.
