Over the past several weeks, I have received hundreds of emails from friends all over the country who are asking some very good questions, making some great points, and continuing the dialogue that Americans should be engaging in.
I've heard from friends who are on the ground in Madison. I've picked up a sign and walked on my state capital. I've read more tweets than anyone should ever attempt...And I've done lots of writing.
The following is a letter that a friend and co-worker (Christine) wrote about her experiences, her classroom, and the lack of true "shared sacrifice" in our budget discussions. This letter was meant to be shared in her local paper and with elected policy makers. I am sharing it with you to give her a wider audience. Thank you for taking the time to read.
In her letter, Christine asks the question that all of us in education have been asking this year - why am I the enemy?
I invite you to take a look and help us explain why educators and other public employees are the enemy?
