ME-Gov: "Worst case is some women may have little beards"

During the campaign, Tea Bag Republican Paul LePage promised that he would be on the front page of newspapers telling the President to "Go to Hell."

What he didn't promise is that some new gaffe would land him on the front page nearly every week - the front page of newspapers across the nation.

This ought not come as any great surprise, not for those that followed his outbursts during the campaign. But for many residents of Maine, our new governor is quickly becoming an embarrassment.

Today's Bangor Daily News leads with this piece, LePage dismisses BPA dangers; ‘worst case is some women may have little beards’. Last December, the Maine Board of Environmental Protection voted to ban BPA from bottles and cups, becoming the 9th state to do so. As part of his promised regulatory reforms (or rollbacks, as many see them), Gov. LePage proposed to:

Repeal BPA rule and rely on Federal EPA and FDA standards.

The scientific community is divided about whether BPA (bisphenol A) is dangerous. In fact, yesterday Gov. LePage's Communications Director, Dan Demeritt, sent an email to the media citing two articles that state that BPA is safe (here and here).

But the Governor's crass comment has now turned the story away from science and to the man himself. Once again LePage has proved himself to be insensitive to the fears of his constituents, whether these fears are based on fact or perception. (LePage also gets the science wrong - it's too much testosterone that causes women to develop facial hair.)

The subject line of the email sent by Dan Demeritt noted above was:

World Agrees with Gov LePage on BPA

There's another thing the world will soon be agreeing on: that Gov. Paul LePage is an embarrassment to Maine.
