OH-Sen: AFSCME Exposes Portman's (R) Hypocrisy On Anti-Heroin Funding In New Ad

Glad to see this:

A new $1.1 million Ohio ad campaign from a labor union needles U.S. Sen. Rob Portman for voting against a budget bill that funded his plan to combat heroin addiction.

The 30-second ad from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which started airing statewide, rebuts Portman's ads touting his work to fight Ohio's heroin and prescription drug epidemic. The ad will air in Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Toledo, and Youngstown, through Aug. 22, according an AFSCME release.

The ad points out that the Cincinnati-area Republican voted against the $1.1 trillion "omnibus" spending bill that included money for his Comprehensive Addiction Recovery Act, or CARA, which offers funding for state and local treatment centers and better access to anti-overdose medicine.

"Rob Portman: can't trust him to tell the truth. Can't trust him to be for Ohio," the ad concludes.

We can’t let these false ads fool Ohio voters, like this one attacking former Governor Ted Strickland (D. OH):

Ohio Right to Life’s press release said, "Ted Strickland stands in lockstep with Hillary Clinton and the abortion lobby in their desire to force Americans to pay for abortion on demand, up until the moment of birth, with their taxpayer dollars."

Strickland supports the Democratic party platform, so although "lockstep" sounds sinister, it simply means Clinton and Strickland hold similar positions when it comes to abortion rights.

Those positions are not accurately described by Ohio Right to Life.

Abortions "on demand, up until the moment of birth" are a hypothetical non-event, according to health care professionals. As for abortions being paid for with tax dollars, this is a vast oversimplification of rules surrounding Medicaid, which provides health care for poor women.

We rate this claim Mostly False.
