Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (D. NY) on behalf of former Governor Ted Strickland’s (D. OH) U.S. Senate campaign:
Ted Strickland (D. OH)
I'm sorry to say that last week, the Senate failed us.
Even after everything we've been through, even after Orlando, Senate Republicans once again voted down a series of commonsense amendments that would have prevented suspected terrorists from buying guns and closed the gun show loophole in our background checks system.
I'm deeply disappointed. No, I'm not just disappointed -- I am truly, unshakably, terrifically angry. We have seen too much tragedy to let Senate Republicans do this to America again.
It's time to change our Senate. Far too many of my Republican colleagues -- including Rob Portman -- are happily following the NRA's lead to keep our dangerous gun policies in place. It's time to get Republicans in the NRA's pocket out of the Senate -- and get a pro-gun safety Democrat in.
This is how it's going to work: If we lift up Ted Strickland to the Senate, we're replacing a reliable vote for the NRA with a Democrat who supports commonsense reform.
Rob Portman just voted with the NRA and against our communities. And he’s shown that he’s a shill for the NRA time and time again. In fact, Rob Portman has received more independent expenditure cash from the gun lobby and the NRA to lift up his candidacy than any other U.S. senator. Now, it's time to get this NRA darling out of office so we can focus on safety for all of us.
