Received this e-mail today from former Governor Ted Strickland’s (D. OH) U.S. Senate campaign:
Right now - at this very moment - in Ohio and across the country, countless millions of dollars are being spent to buy our democracy. As though the billionaire class didn’t have enough power already, the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United decision has allowed the ultra-wealthy to spend millions of dollars of unlimited and undisclosed corporate cash, manipulating our political system.
The vast majority of Americans -- from both parties -- support common-sense campaign finance reform. But getting Senate Republicans to take action won’t be easy -- not when they’re bought by the billionaire class’ Super PACs. That’s why I’m joining a major grassroots effort with Senate Democrats to urge Congress to vote on the “We The People” Act. It’s a bold new effort to overhaul our broken campaign finance system and take back our democracy.
Join us and demand Congress hold a vote on the “We The People” Act! Here’s the plan:
- Pass a Constitutional Amendment to overturn Citizens United
- Institute mandatory disclosure of all special interest campaign donations
- Require all contributions to federal candidates over $1,000 to be reported within 48 hours
- Permanently ban lobbying by former Members of Congress
- Replace the broken Federal Election Commission with an effective watchdog agency to ensure campaigns and special interests follow the law
- Reign in Super PACs by shutting down individual candidate Super PACs and enforcing coordination laws
- Stop Wall Street from giving bonuses to employees for leaving to become federal regulators
We need a campaign finance system based on accountability and transparency -- where every American can have a say and our voices are not drowned out by a few millionaires and billionaires. That's why we need to call on Congress to put an end to Citizens United and restore truth and transparency to our elections. But to get this done, we need you with us.
Sign your name to call on Congress to pass the “We The People” Act and overturn Citizens United: It’s up to all of us.
Thanks, Ted Strickland
