Received this e-mail today from former Governor Ted Strickland’s (D. OH) U.S. Senate campaign:
Ted Strickland (D. OH)
After Sandy Hook. After Tucson. After San Bernardino. And now after Orlando, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, we said enough is enough -- it’s time to act on gun safety. But in the wake of the tragedy in Orlando, Republicans, egged on by the big dollars of the NRA, refuse to take action on common sense gun safety measures.
Thank goodness Senate Democrats are refusing to let the regular dysfunction of the Senate stand. Not today. Not now:
As you read this, Senate Democrats are staging a filibuster on the floor of the U.S. Senate to demand action on gun safety! And I’m joining their call.
I grew up in rural Appalachia, and I believe in the Second Amendment. My creator also gave me eyes and ears, a heart and brain -- and the capacity to use all of them to assess the challenges facing our country. There is no denying that America is facing a pressing and heartbreaking epidemic of gun violence.
So let’s start with a basic premise -- guns should be kept out of the hands of suspected terrorists and, at the very least, comprehensive background checks should be a requirement for anyone purchasing a gun. Those core tenants of gun safety reform will be part of my fight if I’m elected to the Senate. And this can’t wait, so I’m going to do everything I can to support Senate Democrats, right now, in their fight for gun safety.
This filibuster is a bold call for action and I’m proud to support my friends in the Senate.
