For those you who don’t remember, this guy was the Vice President for four years:
Well he’s back and he just thinks the world of GOP nominee Donald Trump and has a great idea who should be his running mate:
The Indiana native, and VP under George H.W. Bush, was on NBC's Today Show on Thursday morning to explain his support for Trump. "I've been a Republican all my life, I'm going to support the nominee," he said.
When asked who he thinks Trump should choose as his running mate, Quayle was quick to suggest Ohio Sen. Rob Portman. "He'd be a great choice. Man of stature, substance," he said. "You pick him, you'd say, 'That's the way he's going to govern.' Rob Portman."
Portman has held a junior U.S. Senate seat in Ohio since 2011. He is currently running for re-election against former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland. According to the Associated Press, Portman is considered among the Senate's most vulnerable Republicans this cycle, as he faces the well-known former governor.
Yeah, don’t hold your breath:
Asked if he sees himself in the No. 2 spot, Portman told reporters, "No, I'm fine."
"I'm running for the Senate in Ohio," he added.
Portman's remarks came after he met with Trump on Thursday as part of a group of 10 GOP senators. The Ohio Republican, who faces a tough reelection bid, said the sit-down "was a good listening session ... on both sides."Portman formally endorsed Ohio Gov. John Kasich but has said he will support Trump if he's the nominee.
Plus Portman already has to spend a lot of money to fend off former Governor Ted Strickland (D. OH):
U.S. Sen. Rob Portman's campaign, drawing on its ample war chest, announced Thursday it has reserved $15 million worth of television and online advertising between June and Election Day.
The Republican's ad buy, which includes $14 million worth of TV ads and $1 million in YouTube spots, is by far the largest advertising buy to date in what's expected to be a brutal and expensive campaign. Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Ted Strickland has so far been unable to match Portman's financial clout – as of March 31, Strickland had $2.8 million in the bank, while Portman reported having $13.5 million.
Portman is the first Senate candidate in the country to reserve ads through Election Day. Michawn Rich, Portman's campaign spokeswoman, said the Republican committed the money now while ad rates are cheap, before presidential campaigns and other candidates swoop in. Rich said it's too early to tell whether the campaign might purchase additional advertising as the race heats up.
Portman's TV ads will be tailored to different parts of Ohio, Rich said – for example, an ad in Toledo might focus on algal blooms, while southeast Ohioans may see an ad about coal. The campaign is also targeting specific TV shows that are popular in a given area, such as Ohio State University football games in Columbus.
Portman will also be using that money to lie and mislead voters about Strickland. In an e-mail today, Strickland gave supporters a heads up about what to expect from Portman:
Rob Portman's very own super PAC just launched its first ad of the election cycle.
It's a $1.5 million TV and online attack ad targeting Ted and calling his record "mixed and spotty".Even by modern campaign standards, this ad is full of so many lies -- it's disgusting. Portman's friends are blanketing Ohio with $1,500,000 worth of completely deceptive attacks on Ted's record...falsely claiming that Ted raised taxes and cost Ohio hundreds of thousands of jobs as Governor.
But look at the facts:PolitiFact, The Cincinnati Enquirer, the Akron Beacon Journal, the Toledo Blade, and other trusted sources all back up Ted. They know that Ohio's recovery began under Ted and that he oversaw the largest income tax cut in modern history. There's no denying that Ted has always fought his heart out for the people of Ohio.
Now, we need Ted to continue fighting for Ohio in the Senate. But if we don’t respond quickly and forcefully to Portman's $1.5 million attack, he may never get the chance: The second poll in a row came out showing this race is a dead heat. Imagine what the next poll will show if we let Portman's lies take hold. I don't want to imagine. That's why I’m urging you to help Ted’s campaign fight back today. While Rob Portman may have a super PAC, Ted certainly does not. But he has something far more powerful. YOU. Thank you for standing with Ted when he needs you most.
