Received this e-mail today from former Governor Ted Strickland’s (D. OH) U.S. Senate campaign:
Ted Strickland (D. OH)
I grew up on Duck Run, a small road in southern Scioto County, surrounded by steelworkers and farmers -- resilient, independent, hardworking people. But no matter how resilient, the safety net and earned retirement benefits that our country provides are lifesaving.
Again and again, I saw our friends and family lifted up by the sense of decency and security that Social Security and Medicare provided. We talk a lot about the stakes of this election -- and on this issue, it couldn’t be more clear, or more personal.
We need to protect Social Security and Medicare from Rob Portman and his millionaire and billionaire Wall Street friends who would transform it into something less and break the promise we’ve made to our seniors.
Senator Portman voted to turn Medicare into a voucher program and supported the privatization of Social Security. He wanted to take the safety net that so many people rely on and hand it to Wall Street -- no surprise given his campaign’s backers. Senator Portman even favors raising the retirement age. It’s the kind of record you’d expect from the ultimate Washington insider.
Imagine telling the hardworking people I grew up with in Scioto County, along with seniors all across Ohio, that millionaire Republican senators have decided their safety net no longer matters. It’s outrageous.
As your senator, I will always oppose efforts to increase the retirement age, cut benefits, and privatize Social Security -- that’s why I released a bold new plan today, Ohio Families First: Ensuring Retirement Security. Ohioans, and people across the country, have worked hard and earned their benefits. I will make sure those benefits aren’t compromised by Washington politicians like Senator Portman who prioritize the D.C. establishment and billionaires’ special interests at our expense.
