Received this e-mail today from former Governor Ted Strickland (D. OH):
Ted Strickland (D. OH)
Fifteen million people could lose everything.
You read that right. Without Social Security, nearly 15 million more seniors would live in poverty. Social Security is a life-saving safety net. It’s humanizing. It is our best impulses turned into policies that make lives better.
Yet, Republicans in Congress and Rob Portman are constantly attacking this vital program. They’ve tried to privatize the program and now they want to raise the minimum age for seniors to be eligible for Social Security.
That’s why I’m joining New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan and a few friends in Congress to stand up to Republicans like Rob Portman who would break our promise on a program that is so essential to America. Will you protect our nation’s seniors with us?
This can’t happen -- we owe it to our nation’s hard workers to give them Social Security they can depend on.
If Rob Portman gets what he wants, seniors could be plunged into poverty. And without Social Security, fifteen million seniors would no longer have what America promised them for a long life spent working hard. Fifteen million seniors would be losing the income they depend on every day.
