Issue 3, the marijuana legalization issue in Ohio, failed on Tuesday 36% to 64% statewide. The vote in Franklin County, population 1.2 million and home to Ohio State University, was similar to the statewide vote 37% to 63%. It's a good sample to study for patterns of support for pot legalization.
Going by the unofficial precinct-level results released yesterday by the Franklin County Board of Elections, this heat map shows the hot spots for support of issue 3 in the county (click for a larger version):
The big concentration of support was in the Ohio State campus area. Other areas of support were the largely black neighborhoods of the near east side, along with white/mixed working class neighborhoods of Linden, Franklinton ("Bottoms"), South End, far east side, and a few other working class pockets. There was relatively high support in white liberal neighborhoods such as German Village, Grandview and the Short North.
In all, 185 of Franklin County's 827 precincts were more than 50% yes on issue 3.
In the traditional domain of marijuana, among minorities, Appalachians and lower income demographics, support was much stronger than average.
A couple more charts showing demographic effects below the fold.
