Thursday night at the CNBC debate, John Kasich took credit for the recovering economy in Ohio:
Now, let me just be clear, John [Harwood]. I went into Ohio where we had an $8 billion hole and now we have a $2 billion surplus. We're up 347,000 jobs. What John Kasich doesn’t say is that the economy would have recovered without Kasich’s policies. In fact, we’d likely be doing better.
In other words, someone who would have just done nothing on the economy, like a pet rock, would have done a better job. I know. It’s a strong statement. Unfortunately, it’s one that’s also true.
How do I know this?
As a nation, the economy is also recovering. The way to judge if Ohio's policies are better (or worse) is to compare Ohio's results to the national average.
