Photo Diary: Schiller Park in Columbus OH

Schiller Park is in the historic German Village section of Columbus OH, settled by the German-American community back before the Civil War. The park was established in 1867, under the name City Park, but in 1891 the local German-American residents installed a bronze statue of German poet Friedrich von Schiller, and the park was renamed "Schiller Park".  It was a gathering place for the local community.

During World War One, when anti-German hysteria ran rampant in the US, the park was renamed "Freedom Fries Park"---uh, I mean, "Washington Park" (some things never change). It reverted back to Schiller Park after the war ended. In 1974 the park was listed along with the rest of German Village on the National Register of Historic Places.

Here are some photos from an afternoon at the park.
