DCCC recruits right-wing extremist to run for Congress in Ohio's 6th District

Quite frankly, we can't trust the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) to help Democrats take back the House in 2014. After all, they've recruited someone who, at least on LGBT issues, could be classified as a right-wing extremist, to run for Congress in the Republican-held 6th Congressional District of Ohio:

Recruited by national Democratic leaders to run for the 6th Congressional District seat, former state Rep. Jennifer Garrison said she will seek the position in the 2014 election.

Let me tell you how much of a bigot Jennifer Garrison is. She was first elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 2004 by gay-baiting a Republican incumbent. Two years later, she helped kill an amendment that would have required Ohio schools to protect students from bullying based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Gay People's Cronicle said this about Garrison back in 2009:

Garrison already has a rocky relationship with the LGBT community. She won her House seat by gay-baiting her predecessor, Nancy Hollister, in 2004.

Earlier that year, Hollister was the only Republican to vote against the so-called “defense of marriage act.” It was considered a courageous vote.

Garrison sent out mailings that read, “If you believe marriage is between one man and one woman, there’s something you should know about Nancy Hollister.”

The other side of the card said, “DOMA was enacted precisely to protect Ohioans from having to accept ‘marriages’ or ‘unions’ entered into in other states. Despite the value of DOMA, Nancy Hollister voted against it. Jennifer Garrison believes marriage is between one man and one woman and will fight to protect our values.”

In 2006, as a member of the House Education Committee, Garrison helped to kill an amendment that would have required Ohio schools to protect students from bullying for their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The anti-bullying bill passed without the LGBT protections.

If the Democratic leadership in the United States House of Representatives sees Jennifer Garrison as one of their own, it's time for new leadership in the House Democratic Caucus.
